My paintings hold broad space in intimate scale to illuminate core positions of self. This work comes together slowly, over months, sometimes even years; printed, painted, chopped, scrubbed and rebuilt. Fine detailing converses with bold materiality.
Working small feels inevitable. When I was a potter, I made cups and bowls scaled to the hands of the user. As a writer, I make words into stories that fit on a page. Because I am short-sighted, what I see up close is vivid and arresting while long views recede. An appreciation for Indian/Persian miniature painting led me to study traditional materials and techniques. These things impact how and what I paint.
I live in East Sussex, via Massachusetts, London and eighteen studios along the way.
